SHANGHAI and SAN FRANCISCO – The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, a leading institution dedicated to musculoskeletal care and research, and INTAMSYS, a leader in polyether ether ketone (PEEK) 3D printing technology and additive manufacturing, have announced a joint-research initiative to advance 3D printing applications in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Led by EDGE Labs, a research division within UCSF orthopaedic surgery, the team – which will develop medical applications for 3D printing — will be guided by musculoskeletal researchers Aenor Sawyer, MD, Alexis Dang, MD, and Alan Dang, MD.

“We are very pleased to work with the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to advance PEEK applications in medicine, as well as promoting health care cost savings in the field of orthopaedics,” said Charles Han, Chief Executive Officer of INTAMSYS. “Collaborating with surgeons to deliver the best possible patient outcomes is what drives our company.”

“This level of industrial grade printing has not been available at this price point,” said Alexis Dang, MD, orthopaedic surgeon. “We are interested in being able to prototype customized implants using high-temperature materials such as PEEK.”

The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, located in San Francisco, provides quality patient care; conducts innovative clinical, basic science and translational research; and trains the next generation of global leaders in orthopaedic surgery.

In 2018, U.S. News & World Report nationally ranked the department in 15 adult specialties and nine pediatric specialties, and UCSF is currently No. 1 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in orthopaedic surgery.
